I have lived in Texas since I was 8 years of age. I attended high school in the Houston area, college at Texas A&M University and settled in the DFW area to work in human resources and to marry my college sweetheart. After five years in HR, I decided to go back to school to get my masters degree in counseling from the University of North Texas. I graduated with highest honors and began my career in counseling in 1995. I have lived in Denton, Texas since 1994.
For many years I worked at various DFW agencies and school districts where I gained a wealth of knowledge in counseling victims of sexual assault, victims of domestic violence, students in all grades K-12, and adults balancing priorities and learning healthy parenting and life strategies. In addition to these agency opportunities, I expanded my areas of expertise in my private practice.
I began my private practice in 2008 and find great joy in working with a variety of age groups and therapy modalities.
•I love helping clients identify the root causes of their anxieties and/or depression and teach them specific strategies to manage stressors, fears, sadness and grief.
•The many roles we play in our world today can be overwhelming. Through talk and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) therapy I assist clients to identify and/or recapture their life passion, to understand the importance of healthy boundaries and to gain a balance between true needs and society’s pressures.
•Many people grow up learning mistruths about themselves and may interpret the world with distorted perceptions – through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) these interpretations can be changed to accommodate accurate and healthy living.
•Using exposure/response prevention (ERP) therapy I assist people struggling with phobias and/or obsessive compulsive tendencies.
•Using Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), clients struggling with trauma related issues, as well as stress & depression, can find relief from this specialized eye-movement and visualization exposure/re-scripting technique.
•A person’s spiritual faith can be an extremely powerful resource in healing and reaching one’s full potential. If desired, I utilize one’s own spiritual journey with great respect and openness of all beliefs.
•I value healthy communication in relationships and assist clients in identifying patterns in their life that may hinder good communication from occurring.
•I believe in the resiliency of all and the great need for children, teens and adults to learn healthy coping skills to assist them throughout their lives.
•I believe in the healing power of group work: assisting clients to heal and grow from the shared experiences of others.
We are called to live a journey that will include very difficult challenges. We are also blessed with strength, courage and resilience to overcome these trials. Sometimes, we forget or don’t ever learn about the incredible strength that is within us. Therapy is not about pointing fingers at the cause of our pain. Rather, it is about finding the cause, grieving the hurt, and moving on to a solution for healthy and peaceful living. I believe the role of a counselor is to assist people during their trials and help them discover their own inner strength to heal, learn and grow.
I am a wife of 30+ years. I have two adult children living on their own and a fur-baby living with me and my husband. Over the years I have experienced the peaks and valleys of life. It is often not easy or pretty but there is typically an inner peace as I navigate this journey. My primary source of strength comes from a devoted relationship with a faithful God. I am very active in my Christian faith formation and believe it sustains me through my darkest days.
I believe in being very authentic and truthful when working with clients and in living my personal life. I believe in the therapeutic techniques I use, not only because they are grounded in years of scientific research reflecting success, but also because I incorporate many of them in my own life and have personally benefitted. Connecting with your therapist is a key piece in treatment. I encourage all to be reflective and honest with yourself when selecting your ideal counselor. Hopefully this website helps you as you navigate and determine if I am the “right fit” for you.
